MXR
JAIL GUITAR DOORS DRIVE
A drive pedal co-designed by MXR and Johnny Wator of Daredevil Pedals to recreate the sound of MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer. It combines Wator's Drive-Bi Dual Gain Distortion with the MXR Micro Amp circuit in two gain stages, with a single knob controlling the output of both circuits. As the gain rises, the first stage boosts the second harder, aiming for the sound of two 100W stacks running full out. Early prototypes were used in actual MC5 recording sessions and appear on the album. The enclosure artwork is by street-art pioneer Shepard Fairey, and a portion of the proceeds is donated to Jail Guitar Doors USA, the nonprofit Kramer co-founded.
Wayne Kramer's roar packed into a single knob
A drive pedal designed to recreate the sound of Wayne Kramer, the MC5 guitarist who influenced countless punk and garage rock players. MXR built it together with Johnny Wator of Daredevil Pedals, who has studied Kramer's sound for years.
A two-stage gain design on one knob
Two gain stages combining Wator's Drive-Bi Dual Gain Distortion and the MXR Micro Amp circuit are run from a single knob. As the gain rises, the first stage boosts the second, aiming for the sound of two 100W stacks at full tilt while balancing cutting presence with harmonically rich drive.
Prototypes used on MC5 recordings
Early prototypes were used in actual MC5 recording sessions and made it onto the album. The pedal was tied to Kramer's music from the development stage.
Shepard Fairey artwork and charity
The enclosure was designed by street-art pioneer Shepard Fairey, with visuals that embody the MC5's rebellious spirit. A portion of the proceeds is donated to Jail Guitar Doors USA, a nonprofit co-founded by Kramer that runs music programs in correctional facilities.
