An overdrive moving the centaur's tone into a small enclosure with vintage germanium diodes
A mini-format recreation of the legendary overdrive known by the name of the centaur of myth. It is not simply a shrunken circuit; fitting the small enclosure required design changes of its own.
The reference unit
The original exists in two circuit versions: the earliest from 1994, and the post-1995 version with an added protection resistor. This pedal references a silver unit built in the 1990s, which carries the later circuit. Its midrange is thicker than the earliest version, which makes it manageable both as a booster into an amp and as an overdrive in its own right.
Designing for the smaller format
To fit the small Effects Bakery enclosure, not only the part sizes but the board layout differ from the original. Working from those differences, component values were adjusted repeatedly to bring the sound as close as possible to the source.
Vintage germanium diodes
Vintage germanium diodes sit in the clipping section. They are a different type from those in the original model, yet they are treated as indispensable to producing this tone.
Tone and response
The pedal lifts the whole midrange at the core of the guitar sound while staying transparent, and the texture keeps its dimension even when heavily driven. The span from boost to overdrive stays controllable, and it responds to the guitar's volume control. GAIN automatically mixes in clean signal according to its setting.
Choosing true bypass
The original model passes through a buffer even when bypassed, lowering the overall center of gravity and lending clean tones a thick presence. Recognising that this presence can be too strong in current music, this pedal uses true bypass instead.
