BALTIC BLUE FUZZ
$144.99Reference price
The BALTIC BLUE FUZZ is a One Control fuzz in the lineage of the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi. Based on Mike Matthews' description of the Big Muff circuit as a fuzz run through strong filtering, BJF designed it as a vintage fuzz pedal for a new era. It is a model informed by the history of fuzz running from the Maestro FZ-1 through the Tone Bender and Fuzz Face.
A vintage-style fuzz voicing early Big Muff character with a modern design
Based on Mike Matthews' description of the Big Muff circuit as a fuzz run through strong filtering, BJF designed this pedal. It is not a clone but a new design sharing the circuit topology, aimed at the tones of the early Big Muffs known as the Triangle and the Ram's Head.
The Muff as a culmination of fuzz history
Fuzz began with the Maestro FZ-1 in 1962, matured in Britain into the Tone Bender and Fuzz Face, and in 1969 the first Big Muff Pi was born in New York. The starting point for this pedal is the idea that the Big Muff — created by studying how an American-born fuzz developed in Britain — holds the origin of the fuzz sound players seek today.
A modern design built on op-amps
The Big Muff approach of combining multiple gain stages with filtering is implemented with op-amps, chosen for stability and parts availability. The design emphasizes a universal construction that can be sourced anywhere, without relying on vintage components.
Tuned to cut through
It keeps a gain range equivalent to vintage Big Muffs, but is tuned slightly tighter and marginally lower in gain to cut through the ensemble. Filtering that makes feedback tones easy to produce also tames the peakiness common in vintage-style fuzzes.
A tone control usable across its range
The Tone knob is designed to adjust across its entire range without breaking up the guitar's sound, and its movement translates immediately to the tone. The kind of tonal variation players once sought by lining up several units of the same fuzz can be explored with a single knob.
