The SDE-3000 is a classic Roland rack unit born in 1983, in the early days of digital delay, long valued for high-quality sound with generous headroom and its distinctive modulation. The SDE-3000D faithfully reproduces that sound while housing two stereo-capable SDE-3000s in a floor enclosure. Alongside an internal chain selectable between series and parallel and extensive I/O, it supports up to 100 memories, MIDI, and external controller expansion.
A floor delay housing two of the classic SDE-3000 rack units
The 1983 Roland SDE-3000 was used by everyone from guitarists to engineers for its high-quality delay sound with 100dB of dynamic range. The SDE-3000D houses two stereo-capable engines that reproduce even the circuit's secondary behaviors in a floor enclosure, controlled through a panel layout that follows the original design.
Reproducing the analog-derived character
It meticulously reproduces the sources of the soft, warm sound: the shifting frequency response in the head amp stage, the distortion from magnetic saturation in the low-pass filter stage, and the distinctive wobble of period parts. It even follows the secondary behavior of frequency response changing with the delay time value, so sounds can be shaped with the same feel as the original.
Remodeled modulation
The distinctive triangle-wave LFO was modeled again from scratch, with DEPTH and RATE setting the depth and speed of the movement. The LFO waveform can now also be changed to a sine wave, and a switch inverts the delay sound's phase to accentuate the modulation.
Running two engines in series or parallel
The two engines take individual parameter settings: series connection stacks different times for complex rhythms, while parallel connection builds wide stereo from slightly offset times. The X2 switch extends the delay time to a maximum of 3,000ms, and the original's feedback loop is reproduced as an internal function.
Foot control and expansion
The footswitches can be assigned tap tempo and delay hold, plus momentary operation not found on the original. Up to 100 memories can be stored, with support for TRS mini MIDI jacks, up to four footswitches or two expression pedals, and the GA-FC foot controller.
