The Roland SDE-3000, a digital delay introduced in 1983, is a classic known for a sound that pairs clarity with musical warmth and for modulation effects that add movement and width. The SDE-3 condenses that vintage digital delay sound into a compact pedal that fits easily onto a pedalboard. A new OFFSET feature also produces dimensional images and rhythms that are hard to get from a single delay.
The SDE-3000's vintage digital delay in compact form
The Roland SDE-3000's tone is shaped by analog-derived elements: subtle frequency response shifts in the head amp stage, distortion from magnetic saturation in the low-pass filter stage, and a triangle-wave LFO. The SDE-3 condenses that clear, warm delay sound, those elements included, into a compact pedal.
Dual-axis knob controls
The upper tier of the dual-axis knobs adjusts the LEVEL, FEEDBACK, and TIME basics, while the modulation, which follows the original's characteristics, has independent DEPTH and RATE controls. Rolling off the delay's highs with the HI CUT knob shapes anything from ensemble-friendly repeats to lo-fi textures.
A second delay via OFFSET
Setting the OFFSET knob between 1 and 100ms adds a second delay slightly shifted from the main one, creating depth through doubling. At the dotted-eighth and eighth-note settings, repeats at different timings mix for accented, rhythmic delays. The range between the two also changes continuously, so it serves complex rhythm building as well.
Stereo and panning
With stereo inputs and outputs, it can also be set for panning delay that alternates repeats between the two outputs. It supports separate wet and dry outputs and muting of the direct sound, staying flexible for line recording and system integration.
Modern features
It offers tap tempo via a long press of the pedal and carryover that keeps repeats sounding after the effect is switched off. An external footswitch enables HOLD, which sustains a section of the delay sound, and LEVEL, TIME, or FEEDBACK can be assigned to an expression pedal. The MIDI IN jack receives timing clock.
