A model that recreates the 1974 Roland RE-201 Space Echo in a compact pedal. The RE-201 remained in production for about 15 years and was used by many musicians for the rhythmic, warm sound unique to tape echo. The RE-2 reproduces that sound and behavior as verified by BOSS, packing the character of the Space Echo into a small enclosure.
The Space Echo's sound and behavior in a pedal-size recreation
A model that recreates the 1974 Roland RE-201 Space Echo in a compact pedal enclosure. It was developed by reanalyzing multiple original units, including a preserved mint-condition example, targeting the behavior as well as the sound.
The RE-201 as source material
In the RE-201, three evenly spaced playback heads produced rhythmic echoes, while tape friction, motor behavior, the built-in SPRING REVERB, and a preamp that brought out an instrument's appeal combined to create its distinctive sound. The RE-2 verifies and reproduces each of these elements individually.
Eleven modes and independent reverb
The MODE knob selects from 11 combinations of playback heads and reverb, and the SPRING REVERB and ECHO levels can be balanced independently. The WOW & FLUTTER knob reproduces modulation from unstable tape rotation, and the smooth pitch changes when adjusting REPEAT RATE and the oscillation when raising INTENSITY behave just like the original.
Ready for modern playing environments
REPEAT RATE extends to twice the length of the original, and holding the footswitch provides tap tempo input or the TWIST effect. The direct sound can be set to analog dry-through or a simulation of the RE-201's preamp, and it also offers a carryover switch, stereo I/O, and external control via CTL/EXP jacks.
